One way we can learn more about the deep sea environment is by physically going down there with a submarine, and one of the most famous ones is DSV Alvin. Seasheels and other marine fossils are often found above water and sometimes even on high mountains. How is this possibile?
First discuss what you think it happening, then do this experiment:
Materials:
-shells (or other objects that can rappresent shells)
-sand or dirt, if possibile different colours
-container with water
Method:
1) put water in container and line the bottom with some shells
2) show sedimentation, material brought by erosion that covers the shells
3) repeat several times to show different layers, one can even be a dark material to rappresent a volcano eruption
4) push the container up on one end to show plate tectonics, causing the container to lift up on one side, creating a small mountain
5) dig a bit and see if you can find the fossils

The image at the top of the page in the header is of a natural saltwater pool called "Piscina di Venere" found at the Cape of Milazzo in Sicily. These rocks have been eroded by waves and wind. However, what's even more interesting is that these rocks were made by life in the Ocean millions of years ago. In fact, they were once at the bottom of the seafloor and are lifting up due to tectonic processes.
