Seven fundamental principles about different important aspects of our ocean.
Our marine anthropogenic impact as well as real examples of how we can make a positive impact.
This website is a digital support tool for the Textbook "A Taste of Seawater - Ocean Literacy Companion Textbook" for Primary School students. Both resources are designed by Carolyn Berger, Vice-Director of MuMa Milazzo Sea Museum.
Carolyn has been working to created educational materials on the ocean since the creation of the MuMa Milazzo Sea Museum in 2019 and was motivated to create an Ocean Literacy textbook at the start of the Ocean Decade in 2021. Her objective is to publish prior to the end of the Decade in 2030! She first shared the book with the public, in a draft phase, during the 8th annual ICASE International Conference for Associations of Science Education in Cork, Ireland in June 2026 and received positive feedback and suggestions from other participants in the Marine Education Strand.
In this website, in addition to material made by the author including: videos, photos and images there are also links to other resources made by other sources. Countless online resources to promote Ocean Literacy already exist. Collaboration and connection are key to offering the best we can all offer to promote and protect our ocean. Links to these resources are found throughout this website, organized by the Ocean Literacy Principle they connect too.
Each student should also use a blank notebook as their "Ocean Journal" to reflect, write and draw the things they learned for homework after the lesson.
Age range: 9-11 year olds
A Taste of Seawater was designed to be used as an Ocean Literacy Companion Textbook during class or in an afterschool science club. However, it can also be used individually by students or adults for pleasure reading or summer homework.
At the moment the book and this website are WORK IN PROGRESS.
The book is scheduled to be published in 2027.
It will be submitted as an Ocean Decade Activity.

These diatoms show activities to do throughout the book. There are thousands of different species of diatoms and these illustrations represent only a few of them. Keep in mind, diatoms are much smaller than this, you need a microscope to see them. They are gems of the ocean and come in different colours, including blue, yet are primarily a light brown shade.
They wander the surface waters of the ocean as phytoplankton and produce energy through photosynthesis. Scientist study the population of diatoms because they are an indicator of water quality and are the basis of the marine food web. As this book is about raising awareness about our ocean, diatoms are the perfect "main character" to point out activities to do to become more sensitive to the environment.
The author has been asked numerous curious and thought provoking questions by students over the years! They are indicated throughout the book as a research buoy, link.
