Part of Ocean Literacy Principle 2: The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features on Earth. On this webpage there are more resources about sea level, tsunamis and tides.
This interactive website made by NOAA allows you to discover the impact of historical tsunami events, see link.
Start with the 2004 Sumatra earthquake using the tool "Selected significant tsunami events". Do you see the rounded lines? Those represent where the tsunami reached every hour. The colours show the energy and the height of the wave.
Can you find where the earthquake was that triggered the tsunami? Hint - look for the dark red dot, click on it and learn more about it.
Are you curious to discover more about earthquakes and tsunamis? I suggest selected the 1960 Southern Chile earthquake, the tsunami that was generated spread across the Pacific Ocean!
Education can be powerful and life saving! Watch this video made by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, link.
A big difference between low tide and high tide can be seen in Derby, Australia at this link. This is a natural change of sea level that happens every day due to the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on our Earth.
This simulation was made by Vaclav Cernik for their University thesis to help students learn about our Earth and it's unique features, link.
Summary: We've learned more about sea level, how some changes are unpredictable and we need to know how to react, while others are predictable.
Q: What did you discover? How did it make you feel? Write in your ocean journal and do a beautiful drawing!
