Part of Ocean Literacy Principle 7: The ocean is largely unexplored. On this webpage there are resources about how to apply the seventh principle to the Mediterranean Sea.
A short video explaining how the 7th principle applies to the Mediterranean Sea, link. Part of the Fins into the Water Library on the European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) website.
Here is one example of a collaboration to promote the protection of the ocean. This YouTube video "Seaso - Return Home" was filmed near Milazzo by Francesco Romagnolo of FraFilms, a director and videomaker. He captured the final moments of SeaSo Project of Carmelo Isgrò, who was raising awareness to protect whales and sailed around the Mediterranean Sea for several weeks. Unfortunately, Carmelo hadn’t seen a single whale during his month sailing. Francesco created this stunning short film to highlight the importance of following your heart and making a difference, link. Combining the work of these both Carmelo and Francesco creates an inspirational video.
New methods and innovative technologies can be incorporated into projects. In this video, another collaboration between Carmelo and Francesco, hear the story of Carmelo's latest project, an old wooden sailboat Cassiopea that is given a new life as an vessel to promote ocean literacy , link.
What did you write for why reserach is important? There can be many right answers because there are many types of research! Regarding the ocean, here's one reason:
Research is important because through studying the interactions between ecosystems and species will can understand the complex way in which they function and help us protect them.
One of the Author's favorite photos, taken in the Marine Protected Area of the Cape of Milazzo in Siciy where she lived. The waters are filled with small black damselfish (Chromis chromis).
Creating marine protected areas (MPAs) will help protect ecosystems and species. Currently only 0.04% of the Mediterranean Sea is protected and we need to do more.
Summary: We've learned about the Mediterranean Sea and how even though it has been explored for centuries, the seafloor still remains largely unexplored.
Q: What did you discover? How did it make you feel? Write in your ocean journal and do a beautiful drawing!
