Part of Ocean Literacy Principle 3: The ocean has a major influence on weather and climate. On this webpage there are resources about ENSO and upwelling.
This YouTube video from the Met Office, the UK National Weather Service, there is a nice animation and explanation of what happens in different states of the ENSO cycle, link.
Today just watch the first two minutes of the video so you know what normal conditions look like, which is what we will talk about in the book (you can watch the rest of the video during the next lesson).
This webpage is a detailed resource with great images. During the class time look at the images together and see how upwelling has an impact on fisheries, link, and it is often found on the Eastern side of ocean basins.
The Frontiers for Young Minds Journal is an award winning resource that brings scientific research to kids, with the help of kids as editors. If students are interested in learning more they should read the article about upwelling and parents or educators can contact kids@frontiersin.org to learn more about becoming editors.
Summary: We've learned about the ENSO and the normal conditions in the Pacific Ocean, and a little about upwelling and fisheries.
Q: What did you discover? How did it make you feel? Write in your ocean journal and do a beautiful drawing!
